Hello,

We've had a recent spat of Russian spambots to our little website. It added several dozen spam accounts to the site and caused all kinds of wonderful havoc. Because of this, we're shutting down the Registration for the website for a while to stop the bots from doing what they're been doing. I also deleted a LOT of accounts that I believed to be part of the tsunami. If I inadvertently deleted your account, please forgive me and contact me to let me know. We'll get you back onsite asap.

Best wishes everyone!

I double checked the settings for the registration process and found that somehow our spambot countermeasures got changed from Q&A to a simple image CAPTCHA. Changed it back so there shouldn't be any more (or significantly less) spam postings.

*whew*

Did it get changed back again? I just had to deal with about twenty different spam posts...

I've been hitting bunches for the last four days or so...

I KNOW... I hate these things! I don't need Viagra, I have my own favorite pornsites ( besides, that is quite personal, thank you very much.) And we often have to use the translator. Come on a$$#oles, speak 'Merrkin!!

Plus they keep putting up twenty of the same thing. It's a bit annoying.

Hi Everyone,

Apparently, there was a loophole for our spam prevention system that I was unaware of. I believe that I've plugged the hole and it shouldn't happen again, otherwise I'll have to look into something more aggressive.

There were close to 3 dozen spam accounts created since the beginning of the month and I've deactivated them, en-mass since August 1st. I'll be going through them one by one to verify whether or not they're a spam account or not. There might be some legitimate accounts that were deactivated - I'll try to have them reactivated within 24 hours.

I appreciate everyone's patience while I adjust our settings to deal with this new issue.

Also of note: Getting the alert on my phone that there was a reply to this post is what alerted me to there being something wrong. Please respond to this post in the future if you are noticing spam attacks - I don't check the site every day when things are running smoothly...

Thanks!!

I think I said it before, but these spam accounts are probably setup and used by some automated system, as such, simply requiring that the first post of a new user be moderated (and further posts are only allowed once that first post has been accepted) should be effective in preventing spammers from posting to the board (AND make you aware right away if there is any singup loophole that allows automated creation of spam accounts).

Some Spam has been slipping through. I've been removing it as I see it.

Just to keep everyone in the link.

Yeah I removed one fella that posted over 40 spam a couple days ago. I ban their IP address so they can't log back in. Glad you fixed it Arrgy!
